On a recent trip to Holland State Park in Holland, Michigan I saw a Spotted Sandpiper foraging along the rocks protecting the pier. I took a couple of pictures and as I continued to focus on the Sandpiper I noticed how the deep blue colors of Lake Michigan shifted with each wave. Although not dramatic, I loved to see the difference in the intensity of the blue changing behind the bird. Here are two shots of the 40+ I took; the change in the water behind the bird is so slight it’s hard to really say one is better than the other, but the differences are there. Use these as a reminder to look for the subtle changes in the surroundings and background in your photographs – pay attention to the bird but note what else is going one, too.
