Two Mondays ago I began sharing some of the pictures I took in South Dakota, specifically at the Ft. Pierre National Grasslands. Last Monday I shifted north, North Dakota that is. Several of our members shared their pictures from there and I recently found out that two of them, Bajadreamer and Mike Affinito, were on the same birding tour by coincidence! Small world! But I digress…
We did see a nice variety of birds in the Ft. Pierre National Grasslands and today I’ll share some pics from the less frequent species seen. First off, a male Yellow-headed Blackbird had a big juicy bug in its bill.
We had two lifers while in South Dakota – one of which was this pair of Lark Buntings. Not a great pic but you have to get pictures of your lifers, right?
There weren’t many wet areas in the grasslands and when we did find one they had a nice variety of birds. We flushed this White-faced Ibis into flight – check out the iridescent colors on the wings.
Me and mini-me! I thought that the Diskcissle on the left looked like a mini-me of the Western Meadowlark on the right
Finally, one of the birds we thought we’d see more of was the Western Tanager. We searched high and low for one but I guess we just missed the signs.
