Last week I shared Bajadreamer’s shot below of a Chinese Pond Heron at sunset. Agricultural fires nearby helped create the orange hue.
He asked, “Do You Like It?” Almost universally, the answer was No! Nobody could get past the orange tint to the sky and water. One person described it as “eerie” and others said it reminded them of Halloween.
As for me, I could get past the orange. It is what it is; an interesting sky color and it deserved to be recorded. I think reframing it might help. If possible, bring the image down so that the land and its reflection bisects the image across the middle which would also bring the bottom of the frame up close to the reflection. I would try bringing the left side in as well. Perhaps those changes wouldn’t make that much of a difference – the expanse of orange water overwhelms the image.
Bajadreamer did submit a recropped image centered solely on the bird.
This one does even less for me – a partial silhouette of a bird surrounded by orange. A lot of orange and a bird that you really can’t see. I like showing the land and its reflection in the first picture because the bird is almost incidental.
In the end, I think this is one of those shots that you would like it to be a Great Bird Pic but it may be impossible to do so.
Thanks to Bajadreamer for sharing this with us – anyone else have a pic you’re not sure about? Send it in!
