Yesterday I shared some BIF shots from our members so today I’ll go in the opposite direction to feature some birds in the water. Enjoy!
Our first photograph comes from Sylvester Alphonso of a Mandarin Duck. This beautiful duck is native to eastern China so oftentimes when they are found outside of their range they have escaped from a private collection. The birds are so beautiful they are captured and transported far away; there was once one of these birds swimming in a retention pond in the southern suburbs of Chicago! Obviously an escapee. I’d be curious to hear what Sylvester thinks about how this one got to Mumbai.
My old birding buddy asteinmann (who has since moved to Ohio) continues his world travels. He was recently in the Galapagos Islands, which are a part of Ecuador. He has shared lots of interesting birds he’s photographed there on our site and I’ll be featuring more of them in the near future, but for now in keeping with our theme, a White-cheeked Pintail from Santa Cruz Island, Galapagos.
Do you often overlook a common bird like I do? For instance, when I was in South Dakota recently there were hundreds of Brown-headed Cowbirds everywhere, but did I take one picture of them? No. So I was glad to see Bob’s submission of a female Mallard he recently shared with us. Lovely colors and sharp edges help make this picture stand out.
