Today I’m sharing four pictures from our members that have one thing in common – they all frame the bird off-center. When post-processing the vast majority of my images my tendency is to center the bird. These four buck that trend, where the bird is off to the right or left of center. Whenever I do this I try to have something opposite the bird to balance the composition.
In this first photograph, Suren Vispute has placed the Mountain Imperial-Pigeon to the left of center. Interesting twigs (which are of a similar color to the bird) balance the composition on the right side.
Asteinmann captured a Shining Sunbeam hummingbird in Ecuador. He framed the bird to the left – the perch is it sitting on extends to the right for balance.
Bajadreamer captured this Field Sparrow while in North Dakota recently. I like how he pulled back on the shot to include the top of the limb the sparrow is perched on. Notice that the bird is positioned to the right of center. What is balancing the image on the left? The creamy green and yellow on the left side of the image balances out the bird and limb effectively.
Finally, another one from asteinmann while in Ecuador. This male Yellow Warbler is positioned on the right with its perch extending off to the left. Effective balance? I think so.
