Rebecca’s Boobies
I was in California a number of years ago and a young man next to me in a store one of those plastic bracelets with this message printed on it – “I Love Boobies”. I thought it was a bit sexist so I asked him about it and he replied that he loves Booby birds. Oops – guess I have to get my mind out of the gutter.
Anyway our New Zealand Naturalist Rebecca has posted pictures of several types of Boobies she saw in the Galapagos Islands. These birds are quite distinctive so I thought I would share them with you today:
First off, the Masked Booby. As you can guess, there is a black band across its eyes. Here we see one with a chick behind.
Next up is the Blue-footed Booby. As you can see its feet are bright blue! Also note that one leg is raised; this is a mating display where the bird raises one foot and then the other to attract a mate.
Here is a closeup of a Red-footed Booby. Quite Striking to see such bright colors on a bird like this.
