I’ve Gotta Go There

A few days ago I shared a picture of many Avocets flying over Veracruz, Mexico submitted by Paul Demkovich.  Since then he’s posted more shots of huge flocks of birds in the air as they migrate south.  Each fall, as birds east of the Mississippi migrate south, some choose to fly over the Gulf of Mexico but others hug the coast down into Mexico on their way to Central and South America.  This concentrates their numbers, creating what is known as the “River of Raptors.”  After seeing these shots from Paul I’m adding the River of Raptors in Veracruz, Mexico to my list of birding destinations.

White Pelicans migrating south:

Black Vultures, with a mix of Broad Wing Hawks and Peregrine Falcons:

Although they’re not raptors, Paul caught this flock of Willets as part of the River of Raptors:

Again, not a raptor, but Paul reported that he saw many Yellow-throated Warblers foraging all around him.
