Mike’s Monday Morning – 7/13/26

Good morning Great Bird Pics members!  On Thursday, July 9 I completed post-processing the 5,884 shots I took in Alaska (I deleted another 1,319 while riding in the van or on airplane rides directly from the camera).  I hope to begin sharing that story next Monday and I think it will be a little different from past Bird Tour Reports.  Alaska is a vast land with miles and miles of tundra.  Do you have a mental image of what a tundra is like?  I bet it’s different from what we experienced and I’ll share some pictures of tundra and the difficulties of photographing birds on it.  Here’s an Alaskan conundrum for you:  I’ve never birded in Alaska before and during the trip we saw about 160 species of birds, yet I only had 20 lifers.  Why?

Here’s one of the first pictures I took in Alaska showing a Red-throated Grebe, found on Lake Hood right next to our hotel.  More on Lake Hood later, as it is a “runway.”

Website update

Well the issues with the website are being addressed.  Some problems, like the missing Load More button in some places have been restored or improved.  The biggest issue continues to be Latest Pics page where an enlarged image of the most recently uploaded photo appears instead of the thumbnails.  I’ve found that when you click the X in the upper right side of the enlarged image it will take you to the correct screen, but it’s still vexing to have the most important page on the site malfunctioning.

They fixed the glitch that omitted the Comments section on each photo, but now when a comment is entered the generated email comes to me and not the author.  They’re there if you look at some of your most recent photos, but the email notification should be going to you.  If you find any anomalies with the site please let me know.
