As we traveled around the U.S. Virgin Islands (St. Thomas and St. John’s) we kept our eyes and ears open to the birds around us. Although this was not a “birding” trip we always had our binoculars with us and I usually keep my camera ready to go. Here are some birds that we saw along the way:
We took the car ferry to St. John’s Island and drove over to Salt Pond Beach. A short trail into the bush led us to a Lesser Antillean Bullfinch feeding on a cactus flower.
The Zenaida Dove has a cinnamon breast with a large iridescent purple patch on the neck. It was found in many areas on the islands.
Lindquist Beach was a quiet (i.e. not too many tourists) beach not far from our place at Point Pleasant. Here was saw a Black-faced Grassquit singing away.
Megan’s Bay was a busy, crowded touristy beach – but if you got away from the beach and into the trees you could find remarkable birds like this Brown-throated Parakeet.
A large shape flew by the windows of our condo and settled in the trees nearby. It turned out to be a Scaly-naped Pigeon.
Although we heard them often and caught glimpses of them in the thickets, I had a hard time getting a picture of Pearly-eyed Thrasher. I finally got this one after a long hike around Coral Bay on St. John’s.
