Prairie Dog towns seen in South Dakota cover areas as large as a couple of acres. They burrow into the ground and use tunnels to connect individual entry holes. Once the tunnels have been created other animals will take advantage of the underground areas for shelter. One common tenant in Prairie Dog towns are Burrowing Owls. Birder2011 spotted a Burrowing Owl in the grasslands of South Dakota on her most recent trip.
