The larger bird at the back is the female, the male at the front is in breeding colours. This was taken just before they left NZ in March to fly to Alaska to breed. They fly back from Alaska 11,000kms without stopping, The longest non-stop flight of any bird in the world.

Thanks for differentiating the male vs female Bar-tailed Godwit. It is usually the male that is larger so I find it interesting that is not the case with these birds. Also thanks for the interesting migration information. Fascinating fact!
