Thanks to Wikipedia I was able to read about the myth that led to the naming of this goose. Before the concept of migration was understood it was believed that this goose emerged fully formed from “goose barnacles”. As such it was considered not to be meat but was a fish thus could be eaten by those of the Catholic faith during Lent. It is a great history that makes great reading.
I would also echo what Mike said about Gil Patmore. He graciously visited with me as I watched the goose feed behind his home. He is a great guy and is very committed to the birds that visit the pond behind his home. He is also a great photographer and willingly showed me several photos he has taken recently.
