American Avocet

A familiar but beautiful scene.

A flock of Avocets at ease, a beach fluddle, Lake Michigan in the background and a nice reflection. I’ve sat in this exact spot many times over the years and I am always in awe of the magical place we call Montrose Point.

This is a full frame non cropped image. All birds are either preening or sleeping except for the bird in the middle which is looking straight at me. The multitude of legs and their extended reflection really spoke to ,me. What’s unusual about this photo is the fact that the entire image is clean as a whistle. No gulls, people, dogs or boats to distract. If you know Montrose, that is rare. Ten minutes after I took this photo there were 125 gulls, 4 Caspian Terns and 6 Forster’s Terns competing for space. And, since it was a warm day, many families appeared and came close to the water. Some times you have to have a little luck.
