I have seen one of these in the trees in Illinois but this one swimming on the shoreline gave a much better look. Very similar to the Double-crested, but smaller with a white mark in the corner of the bill to distinguish it. They always remind me of Nessie when they are swimming like this.

Thanks for pointing out the white field mark on the corner of the mouth – I often forget to look for it. Terrific pic!
