I often see black-capped chickadees on cattails during the winter months. I had thought that they were tearing up the cattails for nesting material, though it seemed odd given the time of year. Upon reading up on it, it seems that instead the chickadees are feeding on the small grubs and insects that overwinter inside of the cattails.
