Unlike the Ruby-crowned Kinglet whose “crown” may be concealed, one can always see something of this species’ crown. However, the male in full display as in this image, reveals a deep orange center to the crown that can obscure the “golden” plumage. Females lack this orange, and only display yellow plumage on their crowns. While not quite a “territorial” display, the male in this image was flashing his dominance in a small flock of Kinglets.

What a great picture of the Golden-crowned Kinglet! I’ve never seen one with that large a “golden crown.” Well done!
Nice shot!
