This Great Blue Heron came in for a landing not far from us. This photo captured my attention because it shows many of its feathers flared out. I assume the feathers are used to help it slow down.

That’s an interesting observation about the “braking” feathers on the GBH. Much like the landing flaps on an airplane! I’ll have to look for that in the future.
