Lesser Horned Owl

This magnificent Lesser Horned Owl was perched on a pile of broken concrete chunks and was keeping guard over his mate who was nearby, sitting on a nest.

The Lesser Horned Owl was historically classified as a subspecies of the Great Horned Owl but is now treated as a separate species based on differences in voice and size and because of the genetic distance between the two. However, Lesser Horned Owl is not yet a Species Name in Great Bird Pics, so for now this is listed as Great Horned Owl.
