This hornbill is a medium size hornbill, The male has a large casque and a large bill and the lower mandible are yellow. The female has a more yellowish bill with a black basal half on the casque. This hornbill is very common all over India season is from April to June. The clutch varies from one to five eggs which are white.
They usually nest in tree hollow of tall trees., leaving a small vertical slit through which the male feeds her. The nest entrance is sealed by the female using its excreta and mud pullets suppled by the male. While inside the nest the female moults her flight feathers and incubates the eggs.
