Owls are enigmatic birds with faces similar to human and have fascinated mankind since time. These nocturnal birds of prey have an almost vertical stance and large head with flat faces. They have raptor like bill and talons.
Owls have forward facing eyes that provides them with a binocular vision. They also have binatural hearing. The circle of stiff feathers around their eyes can gather sound and funnel them into their placed ears. This allows them precisely to locate the origin of the sound. A vital skill while hunting in the dark. They have a unique ability to rotate their heads to 270 degrees . Their excellent low light vision means many owl species are uncomfortable and blind during day light. Owls have a cute sense of hearing. Owls ability to make no sounds as they fly allows them to swoop without alerting their prey. Owls make wide variety of calls some calls are scary. Which is one of the main reasons for their near mythical status in ancient history. All owls are carnivorous depending on the size of their prey can vary from mammals to insects, while some owls are specially adapted to hunt fish.
The tawny fish owl is the most attracted owl. The flight and tail feathers are dark brown and buffish, like other fish owls the tawny fish owl has a large ear tuffs but are hanging at the sides of the head, eyes are yellow with a black spot.
I had the priviledge of holding this in jurong bird park at the birds of prey show.
