As we walked along a trail at Bass River Recreation Area on August 12, 2024, we heard two Northern Cardinals calling back and forth. We could tell by the increasing volume of their chatter that we were getting closer. We rounded a curve and immediately noticed this beautifully colored male. He did not seem interested in us and we kept our distance. Soon we noticed the other female/juvenile off to the right.
