Coming back to California. I am fortunate to have a place near me, Santee Lakes, that has a large population of year round ducks and a large population in the winter of migratory ducks. Many of the resident ducks are quite comfortable around humans. This is one of those: a Cinnamon Teal. These are so called “dabbling ducks”. They tip upside down to feed on vegetation on the bottom of the pond. Hence, they prefer shallow areas of the lakes.
