Even after young birds have left the nest (fledged), they still clamor for their parents to feed them. We have observed youngsters sitting next to a feeder with their parents and rather than going over and picking up seeds/feed on their own, they will sit and cry (sometimes pitifully) for their parents to feed them. I watched this fledgling (on the right) sit on this branch and cry. Within a few minutes its parent came and fed it. The parent never landed. Just hovered, stuck its beak into the waiting youngster’s beak and provided. Shot at Lake Hodges, near Escondido, CA. Northern Rough-winged Swallows. This shot has been cropped heavily-estimated 75%.
