There are certain birds that are often ignored or even denigrated when a photographic opportunity presents itself. This is certainly one of those birds-a House Finch. These are common over a large area of the world. Quite variable in appearance, the males have varying degrees of red or orange (depending on genetics, season and diet) over their heads, necks and breasts. Females are pretty universal appearing and “dull”. Because these birds are common, they often present in unusual settings. This bird was photographed at San Joaquin Marsh and Wildlife Reserve in Irvine, CA. I was photographing a group of Bushtits, when this Finch flew up and chased them away. I kept clicking away and captured this handsome male (IMO). I wish I could have gotten lower for my POV, but alas, the lens foot was already on the ground.
