The species was described by carl Linnaeus in 1758 on the head the male has a short crest on the nape the bill is black with a speckling of pale pink a blackish or dark red knob can be seen at the base of the bill which is similar in color to the bare skin of the face the eyes are yellowish brown, the legs are blackisk. The female is similar but smaller with a feathered face lacking the knob the juvenile is duller with little or no white on the wing.
Muscovy ducks are present in India in states like west Bengal, odisha, kerela, assam and Mizoram. In odisha they are known as moti, kadna, kadua hans and china han. In north east India they are sometimes known as chinae haras, cina hanh, bor china and bhat china.
The clutch consists of 8 to 15 eggs incubation period is 35 days, the eggs are glossy white sometimes with greenish or buff tints. The female builds the nest with twigs and leaves in hidden location. During incubation the female becomes aggressive or refuse to eat . It is the best to leave her undisturbed.
