This bird is very difficult to photograph. Small, quick, does not come to feeders, only spends a second at each flower and tends to perch deep in bushes. This picture is the result of 4 hours of standing in front of a flower bed at Asa Wright (a wonderful place to visit) trying to anticipate and time a shot. If I ever go back to T&T it will be to get better pictures of this bird.

Appreciate the effort it took to photograph this bird. When I zoom in on your photo the details are great. Maybe you can upload a zoomed in photo as well?
Thank you. Yes, even my wife (who enjoys photographing birds herself) thinks this borders on obsession. I enjoy the anticipation and even the disappointment when I don’t get the picture I would like to have is not frustrating to me. I do wish I had the time and money to revisit some of these places as I would love to have many more pictures of this same bird.
Sorry, I never did answer your question about zooming in. Certainly that would show fine feather details better. My primary disappointment with this picture is the busy background. I attempted to clone out some of the background flower stems but that looked horrible. I do not like to totally replace a background in my pictures. I will recrop to see if I can get some of the background clutter out without exaggerating the remaining flower stems.
What an interesting looking bird! So colorful and with different features not seen on other hummers. I don’t know if I would have that kind of patience – thanks for getting the shot!
Thank you for your kind comments and your efforts with the site. I hope it continues to grow.
