Sheila saw a rare bird alert on eBird for a Lesser Nighthawk. Lesser Nighthawks are found from central Mexico and further south, but sometimes appear in south Florida. The eBird GPS location brought us to Lakes Park. A birdwatcher in the parking lot gave us directions for a mile hike to the northwest corner of the park. I navigated us there, found the described path and perch area. My daughter spotted the bird perched about 40 feet up in a pine, in silhouette with the afternoon sun behind the bird. We carefully stepped through the tangles in the woods until we had the sun behind us, and the bird in better light. Group effort – mission accomplished!
