Was birding off of the coast in the Delaware Seashore State Park today and seeing mainly 3 scoter species (black, surf and white-winged), lesser scaups, long-tails and red-breasted mergansers feeding just off shore. A group of 5 red-breasted mergansers took flight and I tracked them for a few hundred yards photographing the group in flight and just happened to capture the two trailing male and female with the male shaking off water from its shaggy crest in flight. The five consecutive images captured in sequence at 40 fps begin in the upper left and proceed clockwise ending in the center image.
