While in Arizona, we drove to Madera Canyon, which is about 30 miles south of Tucson, and went to the Santa Rita Lodge. The owner of the Lodge has maintained more than a dozen bird feeders for 20 years – to attract birdwatchers to his lodge. There were a pair of Hepatic Tanagers that apparently visit regularly.

Nice image! New species for me and found it interesting from its name “Hepatic” as I am a retired gastroenterologist! Interestingly its latin species name “flava” refers to yellow or golden which must apply to the immature/female birds whereas the hepatic applies to the mature male coloration. Or does it apply to jaundice???
