Many duck species congregate in the channels off Lake Michigan during the winter months provided they are open. Sometimes they completely fill up with ice chunks. This male Red-breasted Merganser hopped onto this ice chunk as it drifted about in the channel.
This photo shows it usually not seen foot, the serrated beak to help it hold onto its prey and the intense red eye that caught the sunlight.
