This Northern Shoveler is actually feeding in the water. This behavior was new to me, so I had to do some research. Shovelers will skim the surface of the water to filter for food. This behavior is usually done in shallow water, which is where we were watching him. He uses his specialized shovel bill to strain out tiny aquatic invertebrates.
