Least Auklet

The Smallest in this Species Group (Water Contest)

Viewed 2 Times

The Least Auklet is a seabird and the smallest species of auk. It is no larger than a sparrow.

Included in our trip to Alaska was a few days in Gambell on St. Lawrence Island. A very interesting place to bird. During our time there it was drizzly and the strong winds were from the wrong direction. On the day we were to leave, May 30, 2014, Gambell was fogged in. Gambell has a landing strip but no air controllers. They get flight information from Nome. If the top of the surrounding high hill is not seen, flights are cancelled. Weather finally cleared late morning, and half of the group boarded the plane and landed in Nome. We were on the first flight and spent many hours in the airport in Nome because Nome fogged in so the rest of the group and our luggage made a stop in the other airport on Gambell in Savoonga. Finally, the fog cleared in Nome and our luggage and the remaining participants arrived late in the afternoon. We had an extra one-half day in Gambell, but one less day in Nome.
