We’ve watched the Pileated Woodpecker pair since mid-March. They excavated their nest cavity and were recently taking turns incubating the eggs.
Yesterday I saw the female foraging and then very cautiously approach the nest. I watched for 30 minutes before she landed on the nest tree. She popped into the nest cavity head first with her tail visibly bobbing. – perhaps feeding hatched chicks. She disappeared into the nest for a few seconds and then quickly exited the nest with a fecal sack in her beak. A sure sign of at least one hatchling!
