Boat-billed Heron

Denizen of the night

Often you can make many assumptions about a bird’s feeding, mating and general behavior by simply looking at the adaptations that bird has evolved with. This is an example. This is a Boat-billed Heron, related to Great Blue Herons, storks, and egrets. The large eyes are the result of the bird being nocturnal-it feeds at night. The large “boat-bill” is the result of it being similar to pelicans in that they take in large quantities of water when they lunge for prey (fish and shrimp) and then strain the water through their bill. These birds live in mangroves and swamps from Mexico south to Peru and often roost during the day in large groups.
