Carunculated Caracara
This picture was taken on the road to Antisana Reserve in the Andes of Ecuador at an altitude of almost 12,000 feet. These birds, like most Caracaras are primarily scavengers, but will eat almost any small prey it can catch. Hunting must be pretty good as there are large numbers of these birds in the paramo of Antisana. This area is far above the tree line, so there is only rocks and grass. Small groups of these birds will sit on rocks conserving energy in the thin, cold air. We were there in August and the daytime temps were in the 30’s with a wind chill far below freezing.
