Hoatzin

Another, strange looking, noisy bird

The Hoatzin is a strange looking bird, about the size of a pheasant, that lives in swamps and mangroves of the Amazon jungle.
It is known by other names, including the Stink Bird, because of the foul smelling odor that comes from its GI Tract. It is herbivorous and has a large crop, in which ingesta is allowed to ferment, before being assimilated…similar to ruminants. It is also called the Reptile Bird because chicks are born with two tiny claws on two of their wing digits. The taxonomic status of this bird is often debated and is still unclear.

Wow- that is a strange one, yet beautiful. I wonder if there are more species to be found in Peru?
