I have been fortunate enough to take some good photos of birds over the years. When I look at them, the picture takes me back to a time and place. Certainly one of the reasons I love to take shots of birds. I have also had some “bad” experiences where I missed a great shot. Sometimes it is the circumstances (light, background, etc) but often it is operator error-ie, I screw up. This is one of those examples. I had been shooting in vertical mode (portrait) but switched an instant before this shot to horizontal (landscape mode). My focus spot was one up from the center. I was shooting in burst mode when this happened. Had I remained in portrait mode, I would have captured both birds in the shot-would have made my 5 star list.

I agree – this is a great shot but with both birds in it a sure award-winner. You can even see the feathers on the head of the Gorgeted where the bill of the other bird is hitting.
