American Wigeon

March Migrants

March is when we usually see migrant ducks coming to our backyard pond. Sometimes they stick around a few days, other times they are gone in a few hours. This pair of American Wigeons was new to the pond this year, and they didn’t stay long. The male has a brilliant green patch on the side of his head, which unfortunately didn’t show up in this photo on this dreary overcast day.

These are interesting birds, with lots of colors popping out in different places. Glad they stopped by.
