Despite their reputation for being poor flyers, one of these always seems to find its way to my isolated backyard pond every spring and fall. They have large lobed feet which are great for swimming, but poor for walking so they are rarely seen on land. I spotted this one during the Illinois Orinthological Society’s Backyard Big Day bird count this past April.

That’s interesting about their feet – I don’t think I’ve ever seen one on land before. Thanks for sharing that information.
