Cape May Warbler

Faded in Fall

Even though the bold chestnut cheek of the breeding male in spring is absent, the tiger stripes on the olive back and yellow chest make this non-breeding/immature Cape May male in fall fairly easy to recognize. The females are much more of a challenge to distinguish from other warblers.

Good one – just our our first of the season today, although one of them had more of the chestnut cheek still.

I have seen them in fall with the chestnut cheek still there as well. I couldn’t really find any info as to whether or not the chestnut actually fades in the fall for adult males, so perhaps this is just a first year immature male.
