A Custer State Park ranger told us of Legion Lake forest fire that consumed over 54,000 acres. Nature has a way of rebuilding after fire like that (in some cases the fire is needed for some plants to regrow) but there was still evidence of the fire. This burned out stump was a favorite perch of the Red-headed Woodpecker.
