Short-eared Owls are regularly found hunting from prey just before sunset at Springbrook Forest Preserve.  We trudged through the snow and tried to portion ourselves in a good vantage point and ended up walking through knee-high snow.  Although we had selected our position well we were right in the middle of the two areas we found them on the prowl.  One hundred yards either way and they would have been flying right over us.  Nevertheless we still got pretty good looks at them.  This one looked back.
