Fiery-throated Hummingbird
Getting toward the end of our 2026 Costa Rica trip. Another 7 days of images yet to be processed, but I came across this one that Deb took while we were standing in the light rain earlier in our trip. This image shows a Fiery-throated Hummingbird approaching a flower than is being guarded by a Lesser Violetear. Hummingbirds will commonly stand guard over an individual flower like this. The birds know that the flower will only produce enough nectar to allow one feeding every 30-60 minutes and they do not want an interloper to steal those limited drops of nectar. Never mind that there are dozens of other flowers within a few feet.
