The third day of our Red Hill Birding “Best of South Africa” bird tour was mostly spent at Table Mountain National Park, overlooking the Cape of Good Hope.  Spectacular views greeted us as we got out of the van.  Note the many back specs on the cliffs, which are a couple different species of cormorants.

Here’s a BIF shot of a Great Cormorant as it flew from the cliffs out toward the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

This Cape Sunbird was of particular interest to our Red Hill Birding guide Josh as he uses a silhouette of this bird as their company logo.

We saw a wide variety of sunbirds during our tour, including this Orange-breasted Sunbird.  As you may know hummingbirds are only found in the Western Hemisphere (North, Central, and South America); sunbirds take up their ecological niche in many other places in the world.

The Cape Grassbird was a common bird in southern South Africa.  We heard its song often and got a great look at as we roamed Table Mountain NP.

The next two birds were also found regularly in the souther parts of South Africa and they look quite similar.  First, a Southern Boubou with some rufous on its undertail, and the Southern Fiscal with a pure white breast and undertail.
