We usually associate birds with flight but a large number of species also swim. Since water covers two-thirds of the earth it is by far the largest habitat for food so birds have adapted to find food in the oceans, lakes and rivers. Here are some Great Bird Pics shared by our members of birds on the water.
We start with a shot of the distinctive Black Scoter by docshaf on a river in Delaware. He shared that this was one of over 100 feeding on the river.
Let’s go to the opposite side of the country – the harbor of Los Angeles – for a look at an interesting sub-species of the Double-crested Cormorant. Asteinmann said that the white crests are unique to the west coast for this common species of waterfowl. It certainly gives more meaning to “Double-crested”.
Finally, a look at one of my favorite species of waterfowl, the Canvasback. Its unique head shape and color make this visitor from the north a sought-after photographic subject in the winter. Avneet Kaur captured this image on a lake in Kentucky.
