This and That

Here are a couple of items that might be of interest you:

Cornell University’s Birds of the World website has just added a “Phylogeny Explorer.”  You can explore every Order, Family, Genus, and/or Species for all 11,000 bird species.  It’s kind of fun to click around and see how different bird species are related to one another.  Here’s a screen shot:

Normally the Birds of the World website is by subscription only but they released the following link that works for me.  Give it a try:

I was recently informed by Appnet, the company that built GreatBirdPics.com and hosts the domain, that their hosting platform is under constant attack from outsiders trying to hack their way in to all the sites they host.  The same thing is happening everywhere in the Internet community.  Appnet said that hackers are now using AI tools to infiltrate websites in order to steal confidential information.  GreatBirdPics.com doesn’t contain much information about you – your name, email and hometown.  Appnet offered an upgraded security package to protect the website, which would cost an additional $1,200 per year.  I called them and they said that the standard security they have been providing still remains in effect, so I declined the extra expense for the additional security.  I consider this a hobby website and I’m already paying about $500 per year to keep it going, but I’m not willing to pay an additional $1,200 per year on the chance some bad actor wants to hack into 15,000 bird pics.  One possible future outcome is the website could get hacked and goes down. If that happens I will worth with Appnet to find out what it takes to bring it back online.  I will certainly keep you informed about any changes to the site that might affect you.
