We were with our good friends the Mannings last week while visiting Holland, MI. They are the top birders in the area so we love going out with them. We usually meet at Holland State Park first thing in the morning to see what birds can be found in the channel and along the pier. The channel (connecting Lake Macatawa and Lake Michigan) only had some mallards but the rocks piled up on either side of the pier had some shorebirds flitting around. Six Least Sandpipers jumped off of the rocks onto the shoreline and began to bathe. They would ruffle their feathers in the water and then fly up about two feet, shake off some of the water, and then land back on the beach and continue drying off. I was able to capture their descent toward the beach with feet extended and thought three of them looked pretty interesting. Here are the three shots – which version do you like best?
