Cock-Of-The Rock Pics

Cock-Of-The Rock Pics

First off – thanks to all who shared their Black & White photos for the latest contest.  I’m impressed with the quality of the entries and how striking they are in monotones.  Xwinger and I will be judging them soon.

Some of the most colorful and strangest-looking species are the Cock-Of-The-Rock.  I had a chance to see them in Costa Rica last January and shared some of those pics but two of our members have seen them much more recently.  Cock-of-the-Rock species gather in areas called “leks” where the males show off to the females.  Astute entrepreneurs build blinds near the leks and then charge for entry.  All the pictures below were taken from such a blind.  Take a look:

WildZ went to Reserva Mashpi-Amagusa (Sergio y Doris) Pichincha, Ecuador.  The lek attracted Andean Cock-of-the-Rock males (no females this time).  Click the pic to read more about his experience.

Paul Demkovich was very recently in Refugio Mari Mari, Presidente Figueiredo, Brazil and there were Guianan Cock-of-the-Rocks at that lek.  Here are three of his pics.  Note the last one where he got the head straight on.  Click on any of his pics to read more about his experience there.
