Common Birds?

Sometimes I overlook the birds that are commonly found around our Chicagoland area – I have taken many pictures of all of them already and do I really need more?  Well I do, given the right circumstances.  Here are a few common birds I found an excuse to take more pictures of.

Sometimes the background is so compelling I have to take a shot of a bird that is common – like this male House Sparrow with a red flowering bush behind it.

Here’s a female Northern Cardinal ready to take off from the ropes bordering the trail at Montrose Point.  Quite colorful!

The female Red-winged Blackbird is often overlooked as a photographic subject.  Look closely at this shot and see all the colors around the head and wings.

A Double-crested Cormorant flew in and perched on a trunk sticking out of the river quite close to me.  The lighting was good (high clouds) so I was able to get a lot of detail in the shot of a relatively black bird.

I have lots of pictures of American Robins so I usually don’t even look at the many robins around here anymore.  Except when they are building a nest and have a leaf in their bill for construction material.
