The deadline for GreatBirdPics.com’s latest Bird Photography Contest has been extended! This is because the site is not uploading photographs – a help ticket has been submitted. Please DON’T add new pictures to the site (contest or non-contest) until I give the green light. I am very embarrassed/frustrated/angry at this latest glitch which just showed up in the past week. Although Xwinger will be very disappointed, I couldn’t publish the next installment about my Alaska Bird Tour today because, like everyone else, I can’t upload photos to the site. Hopefully soon.
As you may recall, last week I shared two variations of the same shot to explore cropping off part of the bird. Here are the two versions of the same image of a Fox Sparrow eating. In the first picture I’ve cropped it so there is room around the entire bird and nothing is chopped off.
I recropped the shot so that the seed in the bird’s mouth was more visible, but as a result I had to crop off most of the tail to do so!
Interestingly enough the vast majority of responses told me there was a third option. They suggested cropping the first image to eliminate the space to the left of the bird, effectively zooming in on the whole bird without cropping off the tail. To do so would probably violate the rule of thirds, placing the head well outside of the center rectangle, but everyone felt it would be worth it. Unfortunately I can’t try it because I can’t upload the new version to the site for you to see, but I think you get the idea. The message – don’t chop off the tail!
